Forklift Safety Training

Regulatory Requirement Summary for forklift safety is critical to ensure compliance with OSHA training standards. Implementing a robust safety training program is essential for promoting a safe working environment.

Our forklift safety training program is designed to enhance operator efficiency, reduce equipment maintenance costs, and minimize product or material damage. This comprehensive safety training program covers essential topics, including OSHA training requirements.

Truck-related topics:

Operating instructions, warnings, and precautions for the types of trucks the operator will be authorized to operate are critical elements of any OSHA training or safety training program. It's essential to understand the differences between a truck and an automobile, as well as the specific truck controls and instrumentation, including their locations, functions, and operations. Knowledge of engine or motor operation, steering and maneuvering techniques, and visibility considerations—especially those related to loading—is crucial for forklift safety. Additionally, operators should be aware of fork and attachment adaptations, operation procedures, and their limitations, followed by an understanding of vehicle capacity and stability. The training should also cover any vehicle inspection and maintenance tasks that the operator will be responsible for, along with refueling, charging, and recharging procedures for batteries. Emphasizing operating limitations and reviewing any other operating instructions, warnings, or precautions outlined in the operator’s manual for the specific vehicle type is essential in completing the safety training program.

Workplace-related topics:

When considering forklift safety, it’s essential to assess the surface conditions where the vehicle will be operated. Additionally, the composition of loads to be carried and their stability is critical. Effective load manipulation, stacking, and unstacking are vital components of any safety training program. You should also evaluate pedestrian traffic in areas where the vehicle will be in operation, as well as narrow aisles and other restricted spaces. It's important to identify hazardous (classified) locations, as well as ramps and sloped surfaces that could impact the vehicle’s stability. Closed environments and areas with insufficient ventilation, which could lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide or diesel exhaust, should not be overlooked either. Finally, consider any other unique or potentially hazardous conditions in the workplace that could affect safe operation, as these topics are often covered in OSHA training.

OSHA Forklift Safety Training overview

A trained, certified instructor will conduct forklift safety training that meets OSHA training requirements, available in either English or Spanish at your facility. Please note that we do not offer dual-language classes.

The OSHA training for forklift safety and certification requires approximately four (4) hours of instruction, which includes a written examination, video, and practical evaluation. The duration may vary depending on the number of students.

Important: This safety training program is NOT intended for beginners learning to operate a forklift. Its purpose is to inform or refresh experienced operators on crucial safety principles as mandated by OSHA. If you're interested in becoming a Forklift Safety Instructor, inquire about our Forklift Safety Train-The-Trainer program.

This class is available for both in-person training and online training.
