Lockout Tagout Training

OSTS can develop your general Lockout Tagout policy in compliance with OSHA requirements. This document serves as a foundational framework but does not include the creation of machine-specific Energy Control Procedures (ECPs). The general program will feature an ECP form, enabling your employees to develop Energy Control Procedures independently.

A select group of your employees, typically maintenance personnel, can participate in this course to learn how to develop Energy Control Procedures essential for Lockout Tagout practices. This class encompasses classroom lectures, tabletop exercises, and hands-on activities where students will create procedures for your machines, ensuring OSHA compliance, and then return to the classroom to critique and improve their work.

This training will assist students in understanding the potential for exposure, as well as their liability and responsibility concerning the company’s Lockout Tagout Program and its Energy Control Procedures. If equipment-specific Energy Control Procedures do not exist, students may want to enroll in the ECP development course before participating in an Authorized Level course. Individuals who engage in this training will receive a comprehensive overview of OSHA compliance related to the Regulatory Standard, your written policies and procedures, and how energized machines and equipment impact their daily activities. Key points covered in this course include:

Preparation for shutdown involves essential steps in Energy Control Procedures, including equipment shutdown and equipment isolation. The application of Lockout Tagout devices is crucial for ensuring OSHA compliance. Additionally, proper control of stored energy and verification of equipment isolation are vital components to maintain safety during the shutdown process.

Ensure that all equipment complies with Energy Control Procedures to guarantee safety. Conduct a head count to account for everyone involved. Notify all affected personnel that the lockout is being removed in accordance with Lockout Tagout standards and OSHA Compliance.

Outside contractors may be involved in temporarily reactivating equipment, which is a critical aspect of Energy Control Procedures and Lockout Tagout practices. It is crucial to maintain OSHA Compliance, especially when servicing that lasts more than one shift, and to ensure that the removal of lockout is performed only by personnel who applied it.

Participants will receive materials and handouts necessary for assisting in subject retention related to Energy Control Procedures. The session for 'Authorized' individuals can last many hours when discussing and explaining specific Lockout Tagout processes to ensure OSHA Compliance.

This class is designed to provide an awareness level of information to employees who will not be involved in the Lockout Tagout processes and procedures. This training is essential for OSHA compliance, ensuring that affected level employees understand the importance of Energy Control Procedures and do not attempt to bypass any locked out and tagged out equipment.

The Lockout Tagout Standard requires that the following issues related to Energy Control Procedures and OSHA Compliance be addressed:

Conduct an evaluation of potential energy sources your employees may be exposed to and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations. Develop a formal written policy that outlines your Energy Control Procedures. Assign ‘Authorized’ personnel responsible for executing Lockout Tagout protocols. Create specific Energy Control Procedures for each piece of equipment. Acquire the necessary locks, tags, and locking devices to enforce these procedures. Conduct thorough training for employees, ensuring both ‘Authorized’ and ‘Affected’ staff understand their roles. Finally, establish procedures to maintain the overall program effectively.

All training on Energy Control Procedures and Lockout Tagout is performed in accordance with Federal OSHA, applicable State-chartered OSHA, and other State Regulations and local Ordinances to ensure OSHA Compliance.
